Opportunity Overview
The Automation NPI Engineer Level 3 is a senior technical role responsible for designing, developing and optimising automated test, calibration and assembly systems for PXIe photonic/electronic modules including Optical Sampling Oscilloscopes, O2Es, tunable lasers, OSAs and power meters.

This role bridges product development and manufacturing, applying deep automation and domain expertise to enable reliable, scalable and efficient production.
The Level 3 engineer independently evaluates alternative approaches, proposes creative automation strategies, and influences cross‑functional alignment across the product lifecycle.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development and implementation of automated test and calibration systems for PXIe photonic/electronic modules, ensuring production‑ready automation at release.
  • Develop robust automation architectures, frameworks and diagnostic tools, including PXIe calibration environments, laser sweep automation and high‑speed optical/electrical sequences.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Operations to ensure automation systems remain stable and scalable throughout manufacturing ramp.
  • Own complex issue resolution involving measurement accuracy across lasers, power meters, O2Es, OSAs and sampling oscilloscopes.
  • Support the creation of validation protocols, statistical analysis and documentation aligned with ISO 9001/ISO 17025.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focusing on cycle‑time reduction, error‑proofing and standardisation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and manufacturing staff, providing specialist guidance on sophisticated automation topics.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Software or Automation Engineering.
  • Extensive experience in automation engineering or test development, ideally within NPI, manufacturing, or R&D.
  • Deep expertise in automation toolchains and programming languages (Python, LabVIEW, C#, or similar).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving capability, able to evaluate complex technical issues independently.
  • Proven experience designing system‑level automation architectures (hardware + software).
  • Ability to work autonomously, lead technical decisions and provide engineering‑level judgement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in photonics, electronics, RF or optical instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 17025 or other calibration/quality standards.
  • Exposure to advanced automation frameworks, HIL, or data-driven optimisation.
  • Experience in statistical validation, data analysis or quality documentation.
  • Experience with regulatory, safety or compliance engineering.
